Complete the questionnaire below, to assess your own exit readiness
Please use this Assessment tool to measure your own exit readiness.
It won’t ask you to enter your email or phone number, so you won’t find yourself getting unwanted calls or messages.
The tool is structured to raise questions that will initially enable you, and your partner(s) to assess where you are. There are no points against each question.
Take your time and think around each question, and ask yourself more questions.
This is all about who owns the business and where decision taking responsibility lies.
How long have you owned the business?
How many other shareholders are there?
Are the shares held equally or is there a majority shareholder?
Are relations between the partners still amicable?
Is there a large age difference between shareholders?
Are the partners’ views on these matters aligned?
2. FINANCES
This is all about the ‘optics’ … is the business attractive to a third party if a sale is the preferred option?
Is the business profitable?
Consistently?
Are the profits growing?
Does the business carry debt?
3. STRATEGY
Once again more sale focused, but a useful exercise anyway. Do you have a plan that protects growth, revenues and profits into the future?
Is there a plan to maintain growth into the future?
Is there a plan to remain relevant to your key customers and / or markets?
4. SALES
This is about revenue. No revenue, no business. If you are central to the revenue what is your plan to cede that control without losing sales, and where will new sales opportunities come from?
Who is responsible for sales?
Who manages key client accounts?
Are the plans for key accounts regularly reviewed?
Are sales growing?
How does the business win new business?
5. MARKETING
Do you have a brand and are you investing to raise awareness of your brand? Are you maximising the myriad of channel opportunities to achieve this?
Is there a Marketing Plan?
Do we have a CRM and do we use it to connect with clients and prospects?
Is our brand known amongst our target market?
Do we engage in profile raising activity?
Are we regularly in touch?
6. LEADERSHIP
Is it just you at the top? Do things happen when you’re not there, and does your leadership style encourage subordinates to take responsibility.
Is there a board of Directors?
That meets regularly?
That sets the strategy for the business?
And monitors performance against agreed targets?
